The CCMI (Center for Communications Management Information) research firm recently released a study involving 116 IT and Telecom professionals that found that 60% of companies still have a corporate mobile device plan, while 22% use a hybrid of employer and employee owned plans (BYOD), and 18% are full BYOD plans. There are a couple of schools of thought on BYOD. One is that having employees use their own device allows for more productivity because the employee is more familiar with their own device. The downside is some employers won’t pay for network charges. The other thought is that employers cannot maximize pooling plans and costs go up if they are paying for network expenses, plus the additional help desk support needed for all of the different devices and carriers.
The bigger issue is security of the network from people using their own device. There needs to be enforceable policies to protect the employer’s and employee’s data, as well as security of the devices. There needs to be ongoing training from the employer’s IT and Telecom departments to employees to make sure that everyone is on the same page.
